Mavis:
This year was a good year for her. At the start of the year she couldn't catch up with school work. She couldn't afford tuition, and did not have many people to help her. Therefore, she had to do a lot of work on her own. But she didn't procrastinate and did something about it. She started to partner with God when she studied and learnt to give thanks in everything from this. From an F9 for A Math in the mid-year exam, she managed to pass in the end-of-year exam. For her good results, she wants to give all the glory to God.

Jonathan:
He had his PSLE this year, and God has helped him in this examination. When he prayed for wisdom, God answered his prayer and gave him wisdom to answer the questions on his maths paper.

Kelvin:
In his preparation for the O level exam he will be sitting for soon, he often gets tired during studying. But he meditates on Isaiah 40:31
"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."
And indeed, God takes away his weariness and renews him with His strength.

1 Chronicles 4:9-10 Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, "I gave birth to him in pain". Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, "Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my territory. "Let you hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain." And God granted his request.

Parents want to give their children a good name. They usually give their children names that embodies the hopes they pin on their children. Jabez's mother though, named him "pain". Now, "pain" isn't a very good name, but Jabez lived an honorable life still, more honorable than his brother in fact.

Let's look at how he prayed.

1)He prayed for blessing.
He prayed with an open heart and did not limit God in His blessing.
God can answer your prayers and bless you through many ways. It doesn't necessarily need to be the way you imagine it to be. For example, God can heal through medicine, help you through the people around you.

2)Always thank God for everything.
Yes, even the littlest things.
James 1:16-17 Don't be deceived, my dear brothers. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
A good way to remember God's goodness is to record down all of your prayer requests somewhere.

3)Believe and enjoy God's blessings.
Many people would stop and start to think if they are good enough for God to answer their prayers. Many people think that they aren't as good as someone else and therefore God would not grant them their requests. Do not have this mentality. ^{Matthew 7:7-8}Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
Nope, none of us actually deserve anything, but that is why whatever we receive is a gift from God.

4)Share your blessings with others.
1 Timothy 6:18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.

Only God can cause changes to happen. It is neither:
God is responsible for the results, I am not NOR
I am responsible for the results, God is not.

When you pray, "enlarge my territory" as Jabez did, huge and seemingly impossible tasks will come your way. God will enable you to do something different, new, and larger!
He will sharpen your skills, enabling you to do what you do better. He will also improve your strategy, enabling you to do something more effectively.

5)Pray a prayer of protection.
Jabez prayed, "Let you hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain." He prayed this prayer because he did not want his name to become a prophecy.

Pray for deliverance from temptation.
1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Pray against Satan.
Ephesians 6:12-13 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

We must not fall into the trap of 2 misconceptions:
1) I am invincible to temptation because I already prayed.
2)I do not need to pray for God's protection when I am serving him.
On the contrary, the more, you serve, the more protection you need.

We have to pray even more when we are
1)Just about to serve God.
2)Physically and spiritually weak after serving God.

That's all. Remember to fast!
And oh, this is the verse we are going to meditate on for the rest of the week:
Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

333 Part II

Jesus's prayer was dynamic and powerful. When Jesus comes out of prayer, He walks out with authority, glowing with the presence of God. How does He do it?

Matthew 6:9-13
This, then, is how you should pray:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

The Lord's prayer isn't a chant. We don't babble when we pray. The Lord's prayer is a guideline, a model for our prayer, headings for the things we have to pray about.
It corrects our priorities and independence of God.

1)Set the tone of prayer.
"Our Father in heaven"
God is our Father, the perfect father you could ever dream of. By addressing our God as our heavenly father, we set the tone as an intimate and loving one. Also, the term "father" connotes respect. That's why when we go to God, we go also with an attitude of reverence.

2)Priority of prayer.
"your kingdom come,your will be done on earth as it is in heaven."
We have to honour God first, even in our prayer.
When pray this prayer, you are telling God that you want to see Him magnified in every aspect of your life. When you honour God above all things, you will want to do the will of God. You will have the attitude of submission, obeying the moment you hear God speak.
1 Samuel 2:30
Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained.

3)Dependence on God in prayer.
"Give us today our daily bread."
We need to depend on God for many things. Other than food, we have to rely on God for wisdom, knowledge, strength, love and forgiveness.

There are two kinds of forgiveness: The first is the forgiveness you receive when you first received Christ. This is the type of forgiveness mentioned in Romans 8:1.
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus

The second is daily forgiveness from God. It is similar to the forgiveness of a child from a parent. When a child does something wrong, E.g he broke an expensive Ming vase, there is tension in the relationship between the parent and the child. The parent would not, however, disown the child no matter how big the vase is, or how many pieces it shatters into. The reason of seeking daily forgiveness from God is the same as why a child should seek forgiveness from his father, to release the tension in the relationship. Also, you want to deal with sin when it's still small and nip it in the bud.
So we should pray to God to show us what we've done that isn't pleasing to Him so that we can seek His forgiveness.

"as we also have forgiven our debtors."
We need to forgive people who have wronged us. We don't want to hold unforgiveness in our lives because it ties you down,it smothers you, it can kill you. Forgive people, even if they owe you an apology.

4)Daily protection
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
We are Christians, but that does not make us immune to temptations. We should be humble and pray that God would carry us away from temptation.

If we pray like Jesus, then we'll be able to be more like Him.
Challenge for 54 days: Before you pray, meditate on one of the verses that speaks of God's love relationship with us.

Jeremiah 33:3
Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things that you do not know.
God will respond to you.

Admit your limitations.
In Jeremiah 33:3, God was telling Jeremiah to ask God to do what he could not do by himself.
We need to realize that we are not unlimited, we cannot conquer everything. We have to know that we are powerless and that God is the source of our strength.

Know that God is our answer.
Nothing in this world can satisfy you, nothing can be better than living for God.
Our God has many names.
Jehovah- the all sufficient One
Jehovah Jirah- He is our Provider
Jehovah Rapha- He is our healer
Jehovah Shalom- He is our peace
Jehovah Nissi- He is our banner
Jehovah Tsidkenu- He is our righteousness

This call that we're talking about is
1) A call to relationship.
Prayer begins with God. It started when God sent his one and only Alden, no, one and only son to die on the cross so that you and I can have a relationship with Him. It was God who initiated our salvation and relationship with Him.
Romans 8:15-16
For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

2)A call to real trust.
Hebrews 4:16
Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
We have to expect an answer!
Some people can come up with alot of "what if?"s, E.g what if Ihave wrong motives/ intentions? But you will never know until you go to God.
Psalms 91:14-15
"Because he loves me," says the Lord, "I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.

Also, trust is achieved together with people and encouragement. Pray together with someone.
Be pregnant with hope. Like a foetus growing in a womb of a mother, prayer is hope growing inside of you. Therefore, giving up is like abortion.
You can definitely trust God, so you must never give up praying and hoping.

3)A call to receive
There are things that we do not know. God will reveal to us about these things. But on one condition: Call to God!
We are called to receive the power of God. The power of God can change relationships and circumstances. It helps us to face life's daily struggles. It can heal psychological and physical problems. It meets financial needs. It can handle any kind of difficulty!
Ephesians 3:20
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us

But first you have to discipline yourself to pray. Pray to God for the desire to pray. Pray that He'll turn your prayer into passion.
Live out your prayer.

Living life in its fullness (October 18 2008)

Genesis 1:26
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
Because we are made in the image of God and likeness of God, He wants us to be victorious, wise, full of love, and one who overcomes.

Colossians 1:15
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
"He" here refers to our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, we can only release our full potential if we are in Christ.
Some might argue: Some non-Christians lead a successful life with much achievement.
But we know that these great achievements will amount to nothing in death for them.

John 10:10
I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
Let us live life in its fullness.

How?

1) Have a clear and specific goal.
If a ship in the ocean does not know its destination, it will end up lost.
Similarly, if we do not have a goal, we would end up nowhere.

Philippians 3:13-15
Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you.
Paul's goal was to win the prize for which God has called him heavenward in Christ Jesus. That was why he was determined and unafraid of persecution.
In the same way, a person with a clear goal would channel all of his God-given time, talents and resources to fulfill this goal.

Matthew 7:7-8
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
Seriously and sincerely seek a clear goal from God, and God will give it to you.

2) Start dreaming
Dreaming is important because everything begins with a dream.
Dreams are powerful and are without limits.
Once you have started, you nurture your dream, and you dream out the details.

3) Remove the negative elements.
Negative thinking, negative experiences, negative attitudes, and negative feelings
All of these would pull you down; they would block and hinder your potential.

Do away with negative thoughts. Rid yourself of fear, worry, anxiety and doubt.
And no one should ever even think of the word "impossible" for we know that
Matthew 19:26
"With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible."
To change a negative attitude to a positive one
1) Locate these negative thoughts and attitudes
2) Remove it in the name of Jesus
3) Replace it with the word of God.
Then your mind will be renewed.

Life is simply too short to waste. It is not worth being pulled down by these negative elements. Let us be joyful and positive.
And press forward.

Shape. What's next?

You are a masterpiece of God. We all know that. But what's next?
It's like climbing a hill. As you walk up the mountain, you'll see more and more of the landscape below. As you continue living life for God, you'll begin to see more and more of what you were created for. And then you will taste the meaning of this life.

In Chariots of Fire (1981), Eric Liddell said this:
I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure.
In the movie, he ran because running was his purpose, his God-given gift to glorify God.
What is yours?

Acts 20:24
However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace.
Do you want to run the path that God has intended for you to run? Then you have to know your specific purpose for the kingdom of God. To realize this purpose, there are three things we have to do.

Firstly, we've got to be connected to God.
It is God’s will that we honour Him. We can only fulfill our purpose here on earth if we love God with all of our hearts. It is only when we love God that our motives will be spirit-filled rather than self-centred. When we connect to God, He puts in us the love and compassion for people, and only then can we focus on people rather than ourselves.

Also, you can't just call your friends only when you have a favor to ask of them. In the same way, we can’t ignore God and only turn to him in prayer when we have a request. We have got to talk to God continually.

Look at your phone. The basic function of a phone is to communicate with people. And when you call somebody over the phone you expect a response. Because God loves us, He wants to speak to us and is always calling us. But we have to pick up the phone and respond!

John 15:5
I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
Without God, we can do nothing at all. If we truly want to do something, we have to pursue God.

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
Both of these verses are telling us that we have to connect back to God, that’s everything we want to build our purpose and dreams on. It’s the most basic and crucial thing to do.

Secondly, we have to realize our dreams for God's kingdom.
Are you truly alive? You are truly alive when you function in your God-given dream for His kingdom.
The shirt you are wearing, the service you go to every week, the computer screen you're looking at, they all were once a part of somebody’s dream.

Ephesians 3:20
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us

Go and catch a God- sized vision! God wants a big harvest of fruits from your little tree. Some of us are content with what God has given us, or where He has placed us in. As a result we do not seek to do more.

One day, Nehemiah’s brother came to him and told him that what's happening back at home isn't good at all:

Nehemiah (1&2)
They said to me, "Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire." When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.

Then, he was cupbearer to the king. It goes on like this:

In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before; so the king asked me, "Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart."

I was very much afraid, but I said to the king, "May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my fathers are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?" The king said to me, "What is it you want?"

Then I prayed to the God of heaven, and I answered the king, "If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my fathers are buried so that I can rebuild it."

Nehemiah was cup bearer to the king. This meant that he probably led a good life, with good food and wine and the favor of the king. He however, was not satisfied seeing Jerusalem broken down and wanted to go back personally to rebuild the city with his very own hands.

We have to be like Nehemiah, and do something about whatever God has put into our heart to do. We cannot just pray without action; we have to respond with actions. We have to take up responsibility to make a change and to impact our world, regardless of whatever circumstances we are in, good or bad.

Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
There is only one Mother Theresa, one Billy Graham, and one Martin Luther King. But there’s also only one of you, and the same God who lives in them lives in you. Therefore, there is no need to worry about the size of your dream.

Remember this:
Psalms 37:4
Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Lastly, we have to activate our personal best.
When you operate within what God had made you to do, you will be very effective and efficient in serving people.

Romans 12:6-8
We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

Read this. It’s also from Chariots of Fire.

You came to see a race today. To see someone win. It happened to be me. But I want you to do more than just watch a race. I want you to take part in it. I want to compare faith to running in a race. It's hard. It requires concentration of will, energy of soul. You experience elation when the winner breaks the tape - especially if you've got a bet on it. But how long does that last? You go home. Maybe your dinner's burnt. Maybe you haven't got a job. So who am I to say, "Believe, have faith," in the face of life's realities? I would like to give you something more permanent, but I can only point the way. There is no formula for winning the race. Everyone runs in her own way, or his own way. And where does the power come from, to see the race to its end? From within. Jesus said, "Behold, the Kingdom of God is within you. If with all your hearts, you truly seek me, you shall ever surely find me." If you commit yourself to the love of Christ, then that is how you run a straight race.

We ought to always commit ourselves to seeking and loving God. And let our eyes be fixed on God, keeping in mind that whatever we are doing, we are doing it for God. We know that God will honour those who honour Him.

Passion

Passion is the fuel of life.
It is the great source of energy and drive. It makes us explore new vistas, develop new relationships, and seek solutions to perplexing problems.

S- Spiritual gifts
H- Heart
A- Ability
P- Personalities
E- Experience

Passion is defined as the investing of time, energy and resources so that at the end of your life you will find fulfillment.

We are shaped for great ambitions and purpose. You can have talents, you can have gifts, but serving and ministering comes from the heart. Spiritual gifts are given to us for the church. But in order to know how and where you fit, you have got to have passion. You have to identify your passion. Your heart is what matters. Letting your heart beat for God is something you will never regret.

Some people might have found their passion but have lost it. Some people do not know their passion and do not pursue them. Others know what they are passionate about but are simply not pursuing them.

Do you know your passion? If you don’t, you are likely to be fulfilling somebody else’s passion. You can never be fulfilled when you are not passionate about what God created you to be passionate about.

Some people have suppressed their passion. This might be because of negative comments from people, but the thing about passion is that it is hardwired in you, it’s like a ball under water; it always surfaces.
Rediscover your passion. Fan it into flame.

One day we’ll have to answer to God for what we have done with our lives. We have to take responsibility because we were called to minister.

But still, it’s one thing for you to be passionate and another for you to do something about it. There are 5 principals that we need to have in order for us to make a difference.

1) We must know what drives us.
For some of us, we are driven by recognition, acceptance, our parents, and our own ambitions and desires. But God should be the One who drives us.

2) We have to know who we care about.
People are created differently; some people are created for teenagers, others for little children, some for the old, some for the poor and the helpless.

3) We have to know the needs we will meet.

4) We have to know the cause we will help conquer.
God wants to use the church the change the world. We have to be the hands and the feet of God. We have to realize that the world is our ministry, not just in the church. We have got to be a church without walls.

5) We have to know that our dream for the kingdom of God will be one beyond ourselves.
Our generation can afford to travel and to think global. That’s not for nothing, that’s for God to use us.

There are different areas we can focus on.
-Meeting spiritual needs
-Meeting physical needs.
-Meeting relational needs
-Meeting emotional needs
-Meeting educational needs
-Meeting vocational needs.

Exodus 4: 1-3
Moses answered, "What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, and ‘The Lord did not appear to you'?"
Then the Lord said to him, "What is that in your hand?"
"A staff," he replied. The Lord said, "Throw it on the ground."
Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it.

2 Kings 4:1-5
The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, "Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves."
Elisha replied to her, "How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?"

"Your servant has nothing there at all," she said, "except a little oil."
Elisha said, "Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don't ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side."
She left him and afterward shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring.

When all the jars were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another one."
But he replied, "There is not a jar left." Then the oil stopped flowing.

John 6:5-12
When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?" He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
Philip answered him; "Eight months' wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!"
Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, "Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?"

Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them. Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted."

The thing that runs through the 3 stories is that God will use whatever little you have and multiply it. Would you bring what little you have to God?

In the beginning, God created something out of nothing, but that was the last time. Man was created out of dust, fishes out of the sea, and woman out of a rib from man.
God is the beginning and the end. God is everlasting. God is infinity.
But infinity multiplied by 0 is still 0!
You see, the point is this; you have to have faith, albeit a little, for God to work in your life.

1 Kings 18:41-45
And Elijah said to Ahab, "Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain."So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees. "Go and look toward the sea," he told his servant. And he went up and looked.

"There is nothing there," he said.
Seven times Elijah said, "Go back."

The seventh time the servant reported, "A cloud as small as a man's hand is rising from the sea." So Elijah said, "Go and tell Ahab, 'Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.'" Spiritual gifts (Part One)

Corinthians 12:1
Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.
The word "ignorant" here does not mean stupid, but rather uninformed. We cannot be uninformed about our spiritual gifts as knowing our gifts points us to the direction of our destinies.

We are wired to have the desire to be useful. God have us different and unique gifts for us to be able to share His love effectively
God has a unique purpose for your life.

Psalms 33:13-15
From heaven the LORD looks down
and sees all mankind;
From his dwelling place he watches
all who live on earth- He who forms the hearts of all,
who considers everything they do.

Every single baby is a brand new idea from God. He made you and broke the mould, and there is no other you. That is why you have to be you! You have got to be in your designated role.

Three things that spiritual gifts are not:

1)Personality traits.
2)Natural talents
3)Fruits of the spirits.

Let us consider the difference between talents and spiritual gifts. Talents have to do with techniques and methods, while spiritual gifts with spiritual ability. Talents are natural powers while gifts come from spiritual endowment.
At birth we get natural gifts, at rebirth, supernatural gifts.

What then is the difference between the fruit of the spirit and spiritual gifts?
Fruits of the spirit reveal Christs's contribution to our character, while spiritual gifts reveal the contribution we make to God's kingdom.

1 Peter 4:10
Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.

What is the purpose of such spiritual gifts? It is stewardship, it is to serve, not selfishness.

1 Corinthians 7:7
I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.
God has given us each different and unique gifts, which is why we should not look over our shoulders to be envious of the gifts of another, we should rather be realizing our own gifts and utilizing them.

You have to accept who you are in God, and by faith, do extraordinary things for Him.

Luke 7: 36-50
Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman
Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table. When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner."
Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to tell you."
"Tell me, teacher," he said.
"Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?"
Simon replied, "I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled."
"You have judged correctly," Jesus said.
Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little."
Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." The other guests began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

Now, this is a picture of true, extravagant worship. We have to be like this woman and love Jesus extravagantly because He forgave us.

There are two kinds of people in this world. The first being hard-hearted, proud, arrogant and judgmental like the Pharisees, indifferent to the presence of the Son of God. The second being grateful people who lavish their worship on God.

We can be either of the two at any time. We have opportunities to choose between judging and worshiping God with the whole of our hearts, every single day. Which choice do you want to make? Who do you want to be?

We have to keep in mind that we do not deserve to be in the presence of God. We are not doing God a favour by going to church, or attending cell-group. God doesn't need anyone of us; He is God! But God chose to give us the privilege of going into His presence. It is, in fact, God who is doing us a great, great favour by listening and responding to us.

Therefore, we cannot be arrogant, because a heart of arrogance is the opposite of a heart of worship.

Let us again look at the story of the sinner who anointed Jesus. This sinful woman had nothing to offer, nor any barter to pay for her sins, but she offered to wash his feet, which is sign of ultimate respect and adoration. But Simon showed no such appreciation and he was able to do all those things that the sinful woman did, He was arrogant. We have to be completely humble in worship to God.

But there are also people who are filled not with arrogance, but instead are filled with guilt, like the sinful woman we have read about. But we have to know that guilt can be turned into the greatest instigator of worship. Because the sinner woman was so faithful to Jesus, he had forgiven her sins and allowed her to go in peace knowing that she no longer has to carry that burden.

But all this would not have happened if she were not bold enough to come to Jesus. Therefore, it is important for us to know that true worship is activated by a bold initiative. In those days, women were not supposed to speak with Rabbis. They would only be allowed to do so if they were beggars. This woman probably acted like a beggar to be able to go to the feet of Jesus. But instead of asking for scraps, she lavished her perfume on Jesus.

That is bold. We have to be like her in expressing worship for God boldly, both inside and outside of church. We're not talking about going around telling people that they'll burn in hell, or wearing a sign that says "Jesus freak". We're talking standing for what we believe in even if it's contrary to the world's beliefs, even when we face persecution.

Also, true worship is demonstrated by a costly sacrifice.
Alabaster, the perfume poured upon the feet of Jesus, was worth a year's wages. It could have provided her a chance for her to get married, a way out of poverty into a better future. Yet she poured it all out on the feet of Jesus, she was literally pouring her life away. But this was how much the sinner loved God.

What have we to offer God? All of us know what God has done on the cross for us, and what then, will be our response to Him?

Well, worship is not just a song, or the lifting up of hands. No, that's not all there is to it. The only response to such mercy, such grace, is to offer up everything. Undoubtedly, worship involves sacrifice, costly sacrifice.

Let us look at the following definition of worship.
"It is our response, both personal and corporate, to God for who He is and what He has done, expressed in and by the things we say and the way we live."
What we say most certainly has to be backed up by the way we live.

"When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them."

This sinner chose to use her tears, and expensive perfume to wash the feet of Jesus. She chose to give Jesus everything that she could offer.

"But King David replied to Araunah, "No, I insist on paying the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing."
1 Chronicles 21:24
An offering to God will cost you.

Lastly, true worship flows from a grateful heart.
"Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little."
It is only those who are fully aware of the scope and the depth of His forgiveness that can love much. If we can just comprehend a little bit of His forgiveness, there would be no initiative too bold, no sacrifice too costly. The sinner woman experienced great mercy from God and is therefore able to present the most heartfelt worship to him.

We have all experienced this great mercy, and thus we also ought to present our worship to God in humility and awe and thankfulness.

Halfway mark

Hey people, it's nearing the end of the june holidays (well for most of us)
Maybe it's time to think for ourselves about something.

What do we really want?

Yes. What do we really want.
In our spiritual walk, with our cell group, with our unsaved friends.

Yes! Start thinking, you wouldn't want to spend another half of the year hanging on the line, with not much purpose to fulfil right?

Start to pen down your thoughts! And once you wrote it down, put it somewhere that catches your eye.

Do not let it just be another note on your fridge, in your file.

Let what you want to do be fulfilled.

But of course, you will have to work hard, doubly hard for it.

If you were to get an e-mail from God ...

As you got up this morning, I watched you and hope you would talk to me, even if it was just a few words, asking my opinion or thanking me for something good that happened in your life yesterday - but I noticed you were too busy trying to do your hair and pack your things.

I waited again. When you ran around the house getting ready, I knew there would be a few minutes for you to stop and say "hello", but you were too busy.

At one point, you had to wait fifteen minutes with nothing to do except sit in a chair. Then I saw you spring to your feet. I thought you wanted to talk to me but you ran to the phone and called a friend to get the latest gossip.

I watched as you went to school and I waited patiently all day long. With all your activities, I guess you were too busy to say anything to me.

I noticed that before lunch, you looked around. May be you felt too embarrassed to talk to me, which is why you didn't bow your head. You glanced three or four tables over and you noticed some of your friends talking to me briefly before they ate, but you didn't. That's okay.

There is still more time left, and I have hope that you will talk to me, yet you went home and it seems as if you had lots of things to do. After a few of them were done, you turned on the TV. I don't know if you like TV or not, just about anything goes there and you spent a lot of time each day in front of it, not thinking about anything, just enjoying the show. And you also do that the same thing for your laptop.

I waited patiently again as you watched the TV and ate your meal, but again you didn't talk to me.

Bedtime - I guess you felt too tired. After you said goodnight to your family or perhaps your friend you just had a conversation to, you plopped into bed and fell asleep in no time. That's okay because you may not realize that I am always there for you.

And, I got patience more than you will ever know. I even want to teach I love you so much that I wait everyday for a nod, prayer or thought or a thankful part of your heart. It is hard to have a one-sided conversation.

Well, you are getting up again and once again I will wait with nothing but love for you, hoping that today you will give me some time.

Even as we approach near the halfway mark of 2009, I believe that most of us are facing their Mid year exams right now.
But fret not, for God is with us.
And even in the midst of preparing for our exams, let us not forget to continue to minister to each other through prayer!

Samuel, Shannon - Starting their new phase of life in poly this coming monday, 20/4/09
Do pray for them that even as they embark on this 3 year journey, they will do it together with God, and will draw strength from God when they are tired.

Tiffany - Even as she is going to take her MYE in JC, do pray that she will be able to cope with the amount of stress and workload. It's always not easy to be in JC. So keep her in prayers too.

Mickon - As she is in the midst of thinking of ideas for the new cell group, do keep her in prayers that she will not grow weary, and she will continue to work together with God to make sure that the new cell group will work out fine.

Serving

Even as we expect change, we will see more and more people that is from the cell group rising up to the occasion to serve, as guitarist, as icebreakers, as Praise and worship leaders.

We see praise and worship leaders, icebreakers doing their job, on the surface, it seems easy like ABC, but may I tell you that, it's not that easy.

(I am not scaring you by the way. Lol.)

This post is more for people who is not that clear of how will it be done, and hopefully this post will help people who are serving as first time. Don't worry, nobody is perfect, everyone will make mistakes, even when you are doing it for 1st time, or 1005th time. So are you ready? Here goes (:

Icebreakers

As the name says it, breaking the ice. Don't feel that: aiya, everyone also know each other already, Where got the need to break the ice?

My answer to you: Absolutely YES.

Some may step into the church, feeling down, tired, or even "lonely". What can help them? icebreakers. The process of "icebreaking" need not always be a game, an intro and that's it. You can even throw in ideas like an activity, or something like that. Remembered some time back, the "game" was simply writing a some encouraging notes on a card that is being passed around, and guess what? The "response" was good. So never restrict yourself, think OUT of the box.

p.s: Taboo games will never be taboo if you can change the game! (:

Praise and Worship leaders
Actually we are more of a worship "drawer", when you do Praise and Worship, you draw the cell group closer to God, through songs. Never feel that it's simply just a Praise and a Worship song, pray and that's all. Never restrict God. When you prepare for Praise and Worship, always pray. What's worship without God? It will just be the same as any other songs outside. If God speaks to you, a theme, ask for more. Ask for a verse, ask for songs. If you need help in verses, you can go to this web: www.biblegateway.com . It is a very good site. It has a lot of versions of the bible verses, and it's seriously a good website even just for yourself.

Always prepare beforehand with your guitarist, know the hand signs.
During the actually praise and worship, be SPIRIT-led. Never go religiously,
e.g: Verse 1, Pre-chorus, Chorus, Verse 2, Chorus, Bridge...
Trust God, and you will know how to go about leading the worship.

Final notes

What serving is ....
> To serve God.
> Serving with joy and not grumbling. Since you decided to help out for that week, make sure you give your best. And not complain, whine or do it half-heartedly.
> Serve, giving God glory.

What serving is not ....
> Claiming glory for yourself.
> Grumbling, wanting to let people know how much time you spent preparing.
> Whining, not giving your best just because you are emotionally led.
> Serve and wanting people to praise you.

Just a few verses to help you along in serving:

Colossians 3:23 - Whatever you do, work with it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord, Christ that you are serving.

Deuteronomy 11:13-14 - ..... to love the LORD your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains .....

With that being said, all the best to all who are going to serve and always remember, it's for the Lord our God that we are serving, take heart in whatever small tasks we do, for it is all for His glory.

Fasting and Praying

For those who haven't fast/prayed before, take note that it's not the action that counts, but your heart, your attitude.

Basically, what we doing during fasting is that we don't eat. And while we abstain from the physical needs of our body, we get more dependant on God for our spiritual needs. You can fast and pray about anything, as long as the Spirit leads.

Enough of human words, let God's word speak to you for itself. :)

Hello peeps.

It's gonna be an awesome journey ahead, but how good it is will all depend on how good you want it to be. We always have a choice to choose :)

Let me just tell you what is the plan for these 3 weeks: During the week in your own personal time, fast and pray for cell. And as you fast and pray, you will get new ideas. Pen down your ideas and bring them to cell!

These 3 weeks during cell, it'll be spent on planning, praying, discussing (feelings, plans, anything basically!). Would really appreciate if you all communicate (rmb e skill I taught you all, lol) to me whatever you are feeling so I know and we can fix it together.

This is gonna be real exciting because we're gonna hear amazing ideas. The whole idea of cell group is gonna change. And like I said, I welcome any crazy ideas because if it gets us closer to God, why not?

So this is the practical plan for this Saturday:

The time before cell (1pm) will be used for icebreaker first, then praying. About anything. No need to constrain God, we'll just have an awesome time of prayer, even a little bit of praise and worship if needed.
Go for service
Use some time to plan/discuss/pray for the new cell group
Masterlife
Just a personal time of praise and worship with our Lord

I know that we said we don't like systems and schedules, but there can be spontaneous activity within systems you know! Practical things like your participation, your voicing out of opinions, your ministering to others.. Spontaneous things happen within of systems. Some systems are good, can you imagine if we got our night and day all mixed up? God created them for a purpose, so don't think that we're going back to a schedule again, spontaneous things can happen within systems.

Hi Nissi Salt One,
This post is quite long and random, but please take out the time to read.
It's been quite a long time since I posted something like this.
But recently I realised something that set me to thinking..
Is our walk matching our talk?
We claim that we are Christians, but are we taking on the world with a call of God?
For me, I know where I have been heading, although I was late in fiding out it's the wrong direction, but better to be late than never right?
My purpose of coming here to post this entry out, is really to spur your on.
I know that my attitude towards cell has been bad, I apologise for that.
But I am willing to change.
But are you ready to make the necessary changes in your life?
God has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.
Remember?
All I want to say is that, really do start praying for those people who have not been coming to church regularly alright.
Don't we want to see our cell group grow for the better? And more regulars?
Really DO make an effort.
Keep all of them in prayers.
If you are bored, pray!
If you are thinking of those people, pray!
If you see this post, pray!
Do you know that all of them have been missing out on God's word?
The most basic of all, to chew on God's word, yet they even missed out their chance of listening for what God has to say for their new week.
Do take the initiative alright, I know I am being random, but I just feel that we should really start taking up the initiative.
Be it praying, be it serving God.
You DO NOT have to be a ministry like media, usher or cafe to serve God.
You can serve God in small ways!
Helping out people in cell.
Opening the door for people.
For we are called to serve and not to be served, so start taking initiative and serve God!
Do you still remember the covenant?
If you forgotten about it, take it out.

Look at Covenant of Availability:
I will also take the initiative to do something instead of waiting for some others to do it.
Instead of waiting for people, why not do it yourself?

Covenant of Prayer:
I pledge to offer encouragement and prayer for you out of a sincere heart.
I will not hold back to pray for you if The Holy Spirit prompts me to do so.

If you know of anyone who is unable to make it for church, pray for them!
Ask why?
Be accountable, DO NOT put Mickon in a difficult position.
When Mickon asks something, reply.
There is no wrong answers, if you feel that that's the right answer, just say it out.

Covenant of Feedback:

Bible Reading Plan -- Week 2

Hey people, we're entering into the 2nd week of the bible reading plan, let's all put in the effort to study the bible together as a cell and come prepared this coming saturday alright!

I re-emphasize, that this bible reading plan is good because
1) We can actually finish reading the bible in one year
2) We can be able to come prepared for cell group as an individual and not depend on others to prepare
3) We can feed ourselves with the word of God on a daily basis

So, start taking responsibility of your own personal life with God and study the word of God! We no longer just want to read the bible, but let it be active in our lives, for "the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." (Heb 4:12)

So let's encourage each other on to stay consistent on this plan -- if you have trouble doing it regularly it's time to pray for determination and start calling the people you are accountable to and receive encouragement from each other!

Let's make this work alright ;)

Recap for 2008

I believe year 2008 has been a very fufilling year for a lot of us. And I am just going to post out the events that happened in this cell group in 2008 (based on my memories)

Jan: We had Ignite Conference 2008 at Heart of God church. It was talking a lot on schools, and I am sure all of us who attended it took something home from it.

Feb: We had cell group steamboat, I am sure all of us had a lot of fun.And also, Junyi joined usher and started serving God in this ministry.

March: Mickon, our cell group leader celebrated her 18th birthday, with the company of eggs, flour and other food that was on her shirt. God bless her 18th birthday. haha

April: Combined service. Alden and James got baptised in COSBT, Praise the Lord!

May: Radical Conference '08! Pastor Preston and Pastor Dave was the guest speaker, it was a breakthrough in our lives I believe.

June: Amazing Race! I am sure all of us had a lot of fun and of cos' , we get to work together as a team. I really hope that this was a bonding session for all of you.

July: Nubian Gents!

August: There was a sermon on Fasting, and I am sure some of us got the message and started fasting for everything! It was a good sermon.

September: It was our small group leader, shannon's birthday.

October: For some of the members in cell group, it's EOY exams, which concerns your future.

November: We signed our covenant which brought our relationship with God one step closer.

December: We had My Hope Singapore, which led to the salvation of Rory (praise God!), we also had our YI camp, and of course, our very own, YI X'mas Bash '08. events to come: none other than weiliang's b.day haha

Now moving on, we are moving the year 2009. Surely time flies. Even as all of us enter to a new school year. I am sure all of us will feel tired throughout this journey. Press on salt-one! For we have God with us.

Always keep your cell group members in prayers! How? through whatever ways you can. One way is praying for their studies. Rmb to keep this people in prayer!

- Weiliang: As he serves the nation, pray that he will be able to serve the Lord too!

- Mickon: University, pray for her results for 'A' levels will be good.

- Samuel, Tiffany, JunXian, Shannon, Liyuan: All of this people just graduated from secondary school, and even as they move on to Poly/JC/ITE, keep them in prayers that they will cope with the new surroundings.

- Estehr, Yuri, Serene, Junyi, Ruth, Rory, JunZe, Kelvin: This batch of student in our cell group are going to take their 'O' Levels in 2009, pray for them!

- Corrinne, Alden, IngIng, Vanessa, Jiayi, Mavis, Jieying, James, JunKai, Tom: Secondary 3 students! New subjects, new class. Pray that they will be coping well!

- Zoe, Munho: Secondary 1! different from primary school already, so really must pray for them that all the subjects that they are going to take, they will understand, they will cope well. Also pray that they will be the one to make the difference.

- Jonathan: Primary 6, PSLE. Pray that he will be able to cope with his first national exams.

God really has brought us through this year. He brought newcomers like Junxian, Vanessa, Rory to this cell group. Brought Jonathan back to church. And is faithful to us always. In the upcoming year, let us glorify God and thank God with all that we have and make a difference in our environment! For we are the Light of the world, Salt of the earth.

The newcomers may not have accepted Christ, BUT! We, as Christ's ambassadors, have planted seeds inside their hearts. A person might need to hear the gospel up to 7 times before receiving Jesus into their lives. For this time, this might be the 1st time? or even maybe the last time? Who knows? Only God knows. So do not stop praying!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT :D

Important things happening this week:

FRIDAY

1. Service Prayer meeting
Time: 5pm
Venue: Church 3rd storey
Information: Even though there are only about 20-30 people who came, God is answering prayers through the time we spent praying in this prayer meeting. From the last time we prayed for Radical Conference to Nubian Gents to Amazing Race, we can just see God giving us fun and breakthroughs in YI's events. Not just events, but like last week's service, both girls and guys' side were very good. Of course, it helps much more when people who came are people who really want to pray for service, so please come for prayer meeting, we want to be a ministry who seeks God first in all that we do.

2. Church Prayer meeting
Time: 7.30pm
Venue: Church (not sure which storey, should be 2nd)
Information: This is a church-wide event where all the services would be coming together to pray for the nation. It would end at midnight but you can leave anytime you want. We would be praying for all the other services and also for Singapore, China, Thailand and Kazakstan.

SATURDAY

3. Prayer Walking
Time: 1pm
Venue: Meet at Bukit Batok MRT control station
Info: Please have lunch before you come! We need to pray for the schools of the nation, and each cell group is going to different schools, so let's all come together to make a difference by praying for Bukit Batok Secondary School. Come prepared to pray!

4. Combined Service
Time: 3pm
Venue: Church!
Information: Prayer for the schools of Singapore, and we would have students wearing uniforms representing their schools so that we would be able to pray for them.

Post-script:
This is gonna be a weekend of praying! It's gonna be good 'cos we'll be praying as a cell group, as a service, as a Youth Impact, and as a church whole. We want to be able to put other people first instead of ourselves this National Day by keeping them in prayer. For items 1 and 2, please tell Mic Kon which of them you can make it for. It's a once in a year thing, so hope you all will be able to attend to pray together :) See you there!

Anger
Destructive anger-Do not care what happens to the person

Constructive anger-More focused reaction.
-Do something about the problem that will make the situation better.

Jesus can afford to be anger because He is God and He has

How to handle anger?
1>We shouldn't just let anger happen.
}The thought is the begnning of the deed.

2>When we feel angry,we need to try to analyze our feelings.
}How?by asking yourself questions!
1-Is this really important?If not,forget it.
2-When i look at all the facts of the situation,is there a good and right reason for me to be angry?If not,forget it.
3-How you can express your anger in a way that will make the situation better.

Ready to make a change?If so, then do this homework!
when you are angry with someone, go up to that person and do this.
"You know this is bothering me.We need to do something about it.How can we stop this from happening again?"

Make a change!

Day of Sabbath
Sabbath-shabbat-cease,rest
what's Sabbath?

1>A day of commeration
}looking back at what you have done throughout the week
-Deut 5:4-15
>>Creation and redemption
Sabbath is also a day to remember with gratitude.

2>A day of rest
[i]Body
>God created the heavens and the earths but on the seventh day,He rested. Not because He needed it, but because to set an example for us.
>Our Bodies are not build for non-stop work.
-example from ps. daniel: boy who plays 72hrs computer and dies.
>A person who rest a lot/does not rest is a sign of immaturity.

[ii]Soul
>God wants you to work. Not taking Sabbath as a excuse.

>If you dont have time for church/God,you are going too fast. You may shoot yourself down.

AMAZING RACE IS HERE :D

The top 3 prizes are very exciting (pizza hut and sakae vouchers)! Go out to win but still do things in love! :)

Time to start: 10am. Start in church and end with a short service in church.

No catering this week - you can go out to eat.

Attire: Dark colour shirts or wear swimming costume inside - you will definitely get wet. No slippers. Sandals or shoes only. Berms are ok. Please don't wear shorts or jeans!!! Preferably wear YI tee-shirts.

Bring a change of clothes (inside and outside - you know what i mean.. ), water bottle and money for food along the way.

Bring Ez-link card. Make sure inside got money. You can bring bus guide or map too! ;)

You can assign one person to carry backpack too so that the rest need not carry so many things and all can run faster!

This Race would have lots of exciting challenges for you! See you there!!
